every once in a while i get to have a day where no one yells at me or accuses me of screwing up their kids, i don’t find out that another one of my students is homeless, there are no fights, i don’t assign detention to anyone, i don’t have to raise my voice or put on my “i’m annoyed, get a clue” face, i have no pile of grading to do etc…
once in a while, i just get to really enjoy what i do. yesterday and today were those days and it was amazing. yesterday after school ended, i had some students stick around just to visit with me. they decided that i should be sarah palin for halloween. they also stuck all of my white board pens together in an attempt to get me the next day, but wound up getting themselves this morning when they came up to the board to solve the warm up. i also had another student come have lunch with me today and it was a real treat to talk with her about her life. and on top of that, in my class with ten students failing, one of them bumped up to a C- today. i also had a group of students tell me i have great diction and that i should be an actress, but that then they would be sad because i couldn’t be their teacher anymore.
it was a hilarious, fun day and i love my job.

we are staying at a hotel for a friend’s wedding and thus have access to tv. i have always been sort of appalled by commercials, but one that i just saw takes the cake. it was an advertisement for high fructose corn syrup, literally for the sole purpose of image. the premise of the commercial was that high fructose corn syrup was made from corn, and therefore couldn’t be bad for you. it was the strangest thing i have seen in a while.
they also suggested that it was the same as regular sugar, but it isn’t. fructose is processed by the liver (not with insulin) and turned into glucose then fat. so when you are already getting glucose from sugar, which let’s face it, most of us are, the fructose -> glucose just gets turned into fat because the need for glucose for energy has already been filled.
i should buy advertisement space for apples. apples! just like apples! and always healthy! (insert sexy apple picture here)

tonight was the second game with my women’s soccer team and i am super excited to play with these ladies. it’s looking like the league is going to be pretty tough with lots of highly skilled women playing. this is in total contrast to last year when the league was kind of a mess. the best thing about playing in this league and with this team is that i am going to get a lot of playing time and i am going to learn a lot from playing with people who are so much better than me. hooray!

there are many reasons why i love where i live. this weekend’s display/celebration of my beloved city’s culture of weirdness is a prime example. once a year, people are encouraged more than usual, to dress up in their fairy best, paint their faces and exhibit the local flair at our official celebration. major events include the “slug queen” pageant and a parade along with music on every downtown corner. truly a unique festival. i heart home.

always shocking

it always amazes me when i tell kids to do something, and then they do it. what’s even more shocking is that kids are requesting my class. it’s nice to know they liked me last year. it’s also really nice to have veterans of my class who i can task with helping out. luckily most of the kids that i have again are the kids who really shine when you give them that kind of leading role. we’ll see how my theory pans out throughout the school year.

on a completely unrelated topic, i am looking for books to read. i think i have read all the good books and what’s worse, when i asked the clerk at the bookstore what books she recommended, she had nothing. i just finished every book Stephanie Meyer has ever written and I loved them. i also just finished a book called Speak written by i don’t remember who. i keep trying a book about traveling pants but i just can’t get myself into them. i need suggestions.

i made pants. they represent the most complicated sewing project i have attempted to date. they fit, but there is one small flaw. luckily no one will ever notice. even better, they are lined with purple.

i made chili for dinner tonight and had to cut a jalepeno. we all know that even washing your hands doesn’t get rid of all the oil typically resulting in painful eye incidents hours after actually touching the pepper. this gets hilarious when sophie decided to snuggle with me on the couch and licked my finger. she was so shocked that she leapt off the couch and i am pretty sure she glared at me. maybe this is how we can train her not to lick. lols. lesson learned kitty!
